Delta State to host information training sessions for careers in the healthcare industry

By May 17, 2010General

In response to the current economy and high unemployment rates, Delta State University in conjunction with Career Step, a leading online healthcare education company, will host two information training session for careers in the growing healthcare industry May 27, at noon and 6 p.m. in the Jacob Conference Center of Ewing Hall on the campus.

Career Step, a leading online healthcare education company, enjoys a tremendous market advantage in the industry by virtue of its reputation as an innovative, competency-based training company and is committed to helping each enrolling student graduate and successfully transition to a rewarding career.

“This information session is designed to help people in the Delta area discover growing career fields that they can train for quickly,” said Melissa Stewart, coordinator of Continuing Studies at Delta State. “Healthcare is a growing area, and we can help students prepare for successful careers in medical transcription or medical coding and billing in less than a year.”

The current economy has reduced the number of jobs in many industries, resulting in some of the highest unemployment rates in decades. However, healthcare is one of the few bright spots as it is experiencing job growth despite the economy. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the healthcare industry will create 3.2 million new jobs before 2018 and the majority of those jobs will require less than four years of college education.

Within the healthcare industry, the fields of medical transcription and medical coding and billing are also individually growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the medical transcription field will experience 11 percent employment growth between 2008 and 2018 and that the medical coding and billing field will experience 20 percent employment growth during the same time period. The programs offered at Delta State provide those within the community the opportunity to quickly gain the education they need to qualify for these jobs.

These sessions will provide more information on the healthcare industry, medical transcription and medical coding careers, and training programs. Attendees will also learn more about the school’s introductory free laptop offer for those who enroll in the new programs.
