Delta State music student, Gene Kachenovich of Olive Branch, was recently awarded an honorable mention in the Young Artist Competition in Composition at the Southern Division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) held in Birmingham, Ala.

Kachenovich was selected to participate in the division competition, which includes student composers from nine southern states, after winning first place in the Mississippi MTNA Young Artist Composition Competition in November of 2009.

His winning composition was “Rêve” (Dream), a single-movement work written for violin, clarinet, and piano. It was premiered in April 2009 by Anne-Gaëlle Ravetto, Andrea Cheeseman, and Kachenovich during the Delta State University Student Composition Showcase.

Kachenovich, who writes under the nom de plume of Kyle Valentine, is a senior music major pursuing a bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis in piano. He is a student of Dr. Karen Fosheim.

His most recent works include “Dum Vita Est” a composition for the Delta State Wind Ensemble and Choir.

Kachenovich also recently orchestrated a musical reduction of the opera, “Maria and Draco” by Nobuo Uematsu. This reduction was premiered by the Delta State Opera workshop in March, 2010 to rave reviews. Uematsu’s original opera was incorporated into the video game, Final Fantasy VI.

He is the son of Steve and Anita Kachenovich of Olive Branch.
