Delta State’s The Delta Statement wins big in competition

Delta State University’s student newspaper, The Delta Statement, is the winner of 13 awards in the four-year colleges and universities competition judged by journalism professionals from the Mississippi State Press Association.

 
The awards were announced at a state-wide conference held in Jackson on March 25, at the 11th Annual O.C. McDavid Journalism Conference, sponsored by the Mississippi Press Association Education Foundation.
 
Participating colleges and universities were Alcorn State, Delta State, Jackson State, Millsaps, Mississippi State, and the University of Southern Mississippi.
 
The Delta Statement received 2nd Place for General Excellence category, a major win over many universities with greater resources and larger journalism programs.
 
The publication won 1st Place in three categories: General News Photo by Thomas Wetzel of Yazoo City; Single Advertisement and Miscellaneous Ad, both by Andy Howell of Grenada.
 
The Delta Statement won 2nd Place in five other categories: Editorials by Natalie Pierre-Maliq, of Panama City, Fla.; Single Advertisement, Layout & Design, Front Page and Graphics, all by Howell.
 
The student newspaper won 3rd Place in four categories: General News Story and Investigative Package, both by Pierre-Maliqi; General Interest Column, by Brittany Davis of Indianola; and Sports Photography, by Taylor Mitchell of Cleveland.
