Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why the Music Ensembles at Delta State?

The music ensembles at Delta State University feel like family. You’re not just another number—you’re known, supported, and challenged musically and personally. The ensembles push you to grow as a musician while also creating a welcoming environment where students from all majors can belong. The faculty genuinely care about your success, both on and off the stage.

Why the Delta State Choir?

The Delta State Choir is more than just a class—it’s an experience. It’s a space where music, family, and fellowship come together. We perform high-quality repertoire, build meaningful relationships, and represent the university with excellence. Being in choir gives you a sense of pride and purpose, and it’s one of the highlights of my week.

What does the Delta State Choir have to offer?

The choir offers strong musical training, performance opportunities, and a supportive learning environment. You’ll develop vocal technique, musicianship, confidence, and teamwork skills. The choir also exposes students to a wide range of musical styles and cultures, which makes the experience both educational and inspiring.

Are there opportunities to travel and explore different musical venues?

Yes! One of the best parts of being in the Delta State Choir is traveling. We’ve performed in places like New York City, New Orleans, and Tennessee, and there are plans for future trips, including opportunities to travel abroad. Performing in different venues helps us grow musically and gives us unforgettable experiences outside the classroom.

When does choir meet?

Choir meets during the school day as a scheduled class, which makes it easy to fit into your academic schedule. The rehearsal times are structured and consistent, so it’s manageable even with a full course load. University Choir (Non-Auditioned) (Monday -Wednesday- Friday) 1:00pm-1:50 pm DSVC (Auditioned Choir) (Monday- Wednesday- Friday) 3:00pm- 3:50pm

Can I do Aviation, Nursing, or Pre-Med and still do choir?

Absolutely. Many choir members are Aviation, Nursing, Pre-Med, or STEM majors. Choir provides a creative outlet and a sense of balance in an otherwise demanding schedule. The faculty are understanding and work with students to help them succeed academically while staying active in the ensemble.

Do I have to have years of choral experience to join the choir?

No! You don’t need years of experience to be part of the Delta State Choir. Students come in with a wide range of musical backgrounds. As long as you’re willing to learn, work hard, and be committed, you’ll be supported and guided along the way.

Do I have to know how to sight-read to be a part of the choir?

Not at all. Sight-reading is a skill you develop over time, and the choir helps you grow in that area. If you already have that skill, great—but if not, you’ll learn it through rehearsals and experience. What matters most is your attitude, effort, and love for singing.
