2023 DA: A Journal of Delta Arts Annual Contest Reading

The winners for the 2023 DA: A Journal of Delta Arts Annual Contest will read their works on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 4 p.m. in the seminar room of the Capps Archives Building. This is the 51st annual contest awards reading for student literary works on campus. Winning works have been submitted for consideration in the Southern Literary Festival national contest, and all winners are invited to attend the 2023 festival hosted by Middle Tennessee State University in April.

This year’s winners are:
Poetry
First Place: “The White Dress” by Raven Runnels
Second Place: “The Lavender Scare-crow” by Morgan Raper

Fiction
First Place: “Drowning” by Morgan Raper
Second Place: “Bitch” by Emily Saucier

Formal Essay
First Place: “Women’s Women: Womanism within Hurston and Walker” by Morgan Raper
Second Place: “Feminine Interiority and Menstrual Image in Macbeth” by Kelly Foster

Creative Nonfiction
First Place: “Prodigals Come Home, Orphans Never Do” by Naia M. Lanton
Second Place: “A Vacation from Queerness” by Naia M. Lanton

One-Act Play/Screenplay
First Place: “Cherry Filling” by Kelly Foster
Second Place: “What is Kept in the Attic” by Mason Smith
Honorable Mention: “Suffer the Slings” by Justin Porter

The “Da” Writing Contest is open to all undergraduates who do not have a bachelor’s degree and are currently enrolled at Delta State. Graduate students work may be submitted for publication but will not be considered for the contest. Entries must not have been published in any publication with the exception of The Delta Statement. Categories for submission include: poetry, fiction, one-act plays, formal essays and informal essays. Art work submissions are also welcome but are not eligible for cash awards.
