JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Governor Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) ordered all flags across the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of a fallen Hinds County deputy.

The flags will be flown at half-staff on Sunday, March 2, in honor of Deputy Martin Shields, Jr.

“Hinds County Sheriff’s Deputy Martin Shields, Jr., bravely served his community, and we will always remember his sacrifice,” Reeves said.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said Shields, 37, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call for service on Midway Road in Terry on Sunday, February 23.

According to Jones, Shields had been employed with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for nine months. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said Shields worked at the Jackson Police Department (JPD) from 2017 to 2020.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Shields on March 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at the Jackson Revival Center on Terry Road. There will be a viewing on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., to allow friends, family and colleagues to pay their respects.
