Guest artist to present flute recital at Delta State

By February 15, 2011General

Dr. Leonard Garrison

The Delta State University Department of Music will present guest flutist Dr. Leonard Garrison in recital at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb.22, in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

Leonard Garrison is assistant professor of flute at the University of Idaho, flutist in the Northwest Wind Quintet and the Scott/Garrison Duo, and Principal Flute of the Walla Walla Symphony.

His four CD recordings on major labels have received critical acclaim, eliciting such superlatives as “astounding… remarkable… and superb.” His Delta State recital showcases a huge range of expression, from the blues-derived Fish Are Jumping (1999) by Robert Dick, a charming Baroque sonata by Jean-Marie Leclair, a virtuosic fantasy by Paul Taffanel on themes from Thomas’s opera Mignon, to a haunting alto flute solo by beloved American composer Vincent Persichetti.

Joining Garrison are Delta State faculty pianist Dr. Kumiko Shimizu and flutist Dr. Shelley Collins.

This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the Music Department at 662-846-4615.
