Delta State University announces indefinite suspension of classes; campus closed through Wednesday

By January 26, 2026Severe Weather

CLEVELAND, Miss. — Delta State University has suspended classes indefinitely until normal campus operations are able to safely resume, due to continued hazardous conditions following the recent ice storm. The campus will remain closed through Wednesday, as icy conditions persist across campus and surrounding roadways.

All classes, both undergraduate and graduate, including face-to-face and virtual – all mediums – are suspended until further notice. Faculty, advisors, and the Student Success Center staff will work with all students to facilitate the return to classes and the completion of assignments, which are granted extended deadlines. At any time, please feel free to reach out to the advising office at advising@deltastate.edu.

Tuesday’s basketball games against Union have been rescheduled for February 10. Games Thursday and Saturday are expected to proceed as scheduled; gostatesmen.com will provide updated Athletic Department schedule information on Tuesday morning.

University leadership is closely monitoring conditions and hopes to allow a limited resumption of campus services by Thursday, including a return to regular cafeteria hours, as weather and safety conditions permit. Additional details will be shared as plans are finalized.

To support students and staff members who are still in the area, The Statesman’s Shelf Food Pantry will be open on Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Young-Mauldin Cafeteria will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. through Wednesday, as the university works toward a phased reopening.

Facilities Management crews are actively working to clear and treat pedestrian pathways connecting the residence halls, cafeteria, Student Union, and Wyatt Gymnasium. While progress is being made, campus conditions remain very icy, and students, faculty, and staff are urged to use extreme caution when outdoors, and to pay particular attention to staying out from under trees and power lines.

Power systems across campus are currently holding well, and essential services continue to operate during the closure.

Students who are able and have a safe, reliable place to stay off campus are encouraged to do so. Those remaining in the residence halls will continue to receive support from university staff.

University leadership will continue to assess conditions daily and will provide additional updates as the week progresses, including guidance on the resumption of classes and campus operations.
