CLEVELAND, Miss.— The Art Department at Delta State University recently presented 30 awards to students during the 2023 Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The exhibition is on display at the Fielding L. Wright Art Center through April 20.
The Annual Juried Student Exhibition allows the department to highlight the work students have produced in the past year and affords students an opportunity to gain professional experience by preparing work for exhibitions and submitting it to a jury process. Students submitting work are eligible to win monetary awards in a variety of categories. The awards are made possible through the generous support of art patrons from the Cleveland community.
This year’s juror was Greely Myatt, a professor of sculpture at the University of Memphis and a DSU alumnus. He has exhibited widely across the United States, Europe and Japan. In 1994 he was awarded the Mississippi Arts and Letters Visual Arts Award. In 2009, a twenty-year retrospective of his works was exhibited across Memphis in nine museum and gallery venues.
The President’s Purchase Award was won by Sophia Waddingham for her painting, “Pink Day.” The President’s Cabinet Purchase Award was won by Sarah Elliott for her painting, “Peanut.” Following the conclusion of the exhibition, both paintings will be on display in the President’s Office in Kent Wyatt Hall and will become part of the Wright Center Permanent Collection. The McCarty’s Purchase Award was won by Steve Huber for his “Iron Heron” sculpture.
The Wright Center is open Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on weekends, holidays, and during semester breaks.
