Delta State University undergraduates who live in Water Valley, Miss., now have the opportunity to apply for an annual $500 scholarship just for them, thanks to a pair of local religious leaders, Pastor Mitchell Steen and his wife, Lanell Steen.
“We chose students from Water Valley because we believe charity should start at home,” said Pastor Steen, who has served as pastor of the Greater Sanders Chapel in Water Valley for 14 years. “This is our year at the church to sow seeds into our community,” he continued, “and this opportunity was presented to us and we felt obligated to do so.”
The Greater Sanders Chapel Scholarship is open to Water Valley residents who are enrolled at Delta State as full-time undergraduates, who possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75, and who participate in community service or leadership service projects on campus.
“I pray that our giving will help young people to succeed and motivate them to continue in their education,” added Pastor Steen, a first-time Delta State donor who was reared in Coffeeville and whose wife is part of the ministry team. “I hope what we have given lets our community know that there is a church back home that is pulling for them.”
