
The Delta State University Department of Music will present clarinetist Christopher Nichols in a guest recital on Wednesday, September 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. Nichols will be assisted by Delta State University pianist Kumiko Shimizu, associate professor of music, and countertenor Chad Payton, assistant professor of music. The performance will include works by Paul Harvey, Antonio Vivaldi, Francis Poulenc, Robert Schumann, Aurelio Magnani, and John Williams.
Performances by Nichols have been described in the Hays Daily News as "flawless." He currently performs as principal clarinet with the 312th Army Band of Lawrence, Kansas and the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City. He currently teaches applied clarinet and saxophone, and directs the Concordia University Chamber Orchestra at Concordia University, Nebraska.
His previous performance credits include the 1st Infantry Division Band, the United States Army Europe Band, the Salina Symphony, the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston, and solo performances with the 312th Army Band, the University Park Symphony Orchestra, the Hays Symphony Orchestra, and the University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra. He has served on the faculties of Americana Music Academy, the Ottley Music School, the Boston Arts Academy and the Berklee College of Music Preparatory School.
He maintains memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the College Music Society, the International Clarinet Association, Music Teachers National Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. He holds degrees from the Boston Conservatory, Kansas State University, and the University of Kansas.
