Biography

Chris Smith has served as the Technical Program Manager of the Center for Interdisciplinary Geospatial Information Technologies at Delta State University since 2015. In this capacity, he acts as the department supervisor, reporting directly to the Department Chair. Mr. Smith manages geospatial grants and sponsored projects, is the Center’s system administrator, and is the GIS system architect for a multi-tier enterprise GIS. Moreover, Mr. Smith is responsible for advising and managing of program students and student employees. Mr. Smith serves as a Storm Spotter, Disaster Reservist for MEMA, and as a volunteer firefighter.  He is Co-Chair of the Public Relations Committee for Battalion One at the Bolivar County (MS) Volunteer Fire Department, where he has intermittently volunteered since 2008.  He spent four years in northern Virginia where he was a firefighter and EMT-B for the Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, an affiliate of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. In addition, he has served in a variety of Emergency Service positions in both a volunteer and career capacity since 2008. Mr. Smith has volunteered his services, time, and effort for significant events and crises such as the Nepal Earthquake in 2015, Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and Hurricanes Dolly and Gustav in 2008, among many others. Mr. Smith received his M.A.S. in Geospatial Information Technologies at Delta State University in 2016 and a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Delta State University in 2011. Significant awards and achievements include a commendation for service from the Department of Homeland Security National Protection and Program Directorate, a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Office of Geography, and a second place for Best Press Copy Atlas at the 2011 ESRI User’s Conference.  Recognition within the Emergency Service field include Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Firefighter, Firefighter Attending the Most Fire Calls, and Most Outstanding Firefighter.  Mr. Smith is also a GISP, License 277682.
