Delta State University’s B.E.E.P (Breast Education & Early-detection Project) and the College of Education and Human Science’s Recreation Leadership Program are teaming up to fight breast cancer with an inaugural Walk-a-thon for Breast Cancer Awareness. This event will raise funds to help provide mammograms and education for women in need.

“Walk or jog with us to support breast cancer education and early-detection practices,” said Gail Bailey, B.E.E.P. project coordinator. “Walk as long as you can or as long as you wish. For each completed lap, Sonic Drive-In of Cleveland will donate $0.50 to B.E.E.P., up to $500. The more you walk, the more we earn together to fight breast cancer. Donations will also be accepted from participants.”

The event will be held on Oct. 1 from 4-6 p.m. at the Delta State fitness trail on Maple Street across from the Delta State physical plant. Registration will be held on site. The Breast Education and Early-detection Project (B.E.E.P) at Delta State partnered with the Delta State University Golf Course to sponsor the first annual Delta State University B.E.E.P Breast Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament on Oct. 26, 2013.

Barnett and Glorioso met recently with B.E.E.P. staff and AmeriCorps*VISTA to make plans for the 2014 tournament, which will be held next October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Gifts of appreciation and a photo album were presented to Barnett and Glorioso by the B.E.E.P. staff and Americorps*VISTA members.

“B.E.E.P. would like to thank Cecil Barnett and Johnny Glorioso, the sponsors and the individuals who played in the tournament for supporting this fundraising event,” said Gail Bailey, B.E.E.P. project coordinator.

The mission of B.E.E.P. is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease through provision of innovative and creative approaches in teaching breast cancer awareness and prevention to women within the Bolivar, Sunflower and Washington counties who have limited access to preventive care.

B.E.E.P. operates as part of the Center for Community and Economic Development at Delta State, and is funded through a grant from the Central Mississippi Steel Magnolias affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

The Americorps*VISTA program at Delta State partners with B.E.E.P. to allow VISTA members to work with the program throughout the year. VISTA members Kizmet Cleveland, Taneisha Jackson and Jimisha Washington have worked with the project during the 2013-14 grant year. Along with Bailey, other B.E.E.P. staff includes Shawana Ford, assistant project coordinator.

The project offers and participates in educational sessions, health fairs, school events and community-sponsored events throughout the three-county area to promote breast health awareness.

B.E.E.P. also offers a limited number of clinical breast exams and mammograms at no cost to women who are 40-years-old or older, and who have limited income and are underinsured or uninsured.
