Kool & the Gang officially launched in 1969 after performing for five years under various band titles. The group has recorded a number of hits over the years, including “Jungle Boogie,” “Hollywood Swinging,” Ladies’ Night,” “Celebration,” “Get Down on It,” “Joanna” and “Cherish.”
In addition to two Grammys, Kool & the Gang have won seven American Music Awards and a Music Business Association Chairman’s Award for artistic achievement. They have compiled 25 top-10 R&B hits and nine top-10 pop hits, as well as 31 gold and platinum albums.
Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations, due in part to the group’s widely sampled catalogue. Kool & the Gang’s drumbeats, bass, guitar, and signature horn lines lace the tracks of numerous artists, including the Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Cypress Hill, and P. Diddy. Kool & the Gang is the most sampled band in hip-hop by far. Kool & the Gang’s music is also featured on the soundtracks for Rocky, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Wreck-It Ralph, and countless others.
Approaching their 50th anniversary, Kool & the Gang recently had artifacts from the band’s archive go on display at the newly opened GRAMMY Museum Experience™ in Newark, N.J. Also, a street in their hometown of Jersey City, N.J., was renamed in their honor: Kool & The Gang Way.
Tickets to see Kool & the Gang are now on sale at www.bolognapac.com or at the BPAC Ticket Office at 662.846.4626.
