Fireside Chat – October 29, 2018 – Election Day 2018

Joining President LaForge to discuss the upcoming elections is Arlene Sanders, an instructor in political science in the division of social sciences and history.

Elections are based on numbers. With the midterm elections fast approaching, here are some interesting figures to consider before Election Day on November 6.

•All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election; 1/3 of the U.S. Senate
•There are 1,811 voting precincts in Mississippi, including 28 in Bolivar County.
•13,636 citizens in Bolivar County and more than 1.2 million Mississippians voted in the 2016 presidential election.
•In 2016, the voting-age population in Mississippi was 2.2 million. Of those, 1.7 million were registered voters and 1.5 million voted.

In other news on campus, the Wiley Planetarium is showing the program “Violent Universe” tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12, senior citizens, and anyone with an Okra Card. Also, if you have young children, we invite you to bring them to our Athletics Department’s annual Trunk or Treat event, which will take place on Wednesday from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. at Statesman Park.
