The Delta State University Alumni Association announced its summer picnic travel schedule. The Alumni Association staff will visit New York City, Atlanta and Washington D.C. for the annual Mississippi picnics this June.

The Mississippi Society of Georgia’s annual Mississippi in the Park is June 6 at Chastain Park. The picnic is from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There are a variety of activities planned this year, including a golf tournament and an Atlanta Braves game. The group will also award a scholarship for a Georgia resident who will be attending a Mississippi school in the fall. For more information on this event, visit the society’s website www.mssocietyofga.org.

“The annual Atlanta’s Mississippi in the Park provides an opportunity for Mississippians who now reside in the Greater Atlanta area to identify back with their home state,” said Jeffrey Farris, director of Alumni Affairs. “The event provides an opportunity for colleges and universities to connect with their alumni and friends who live in the area. Delta State alumni come out in droves each year to enjoy live entertainment, catfish, artwork and fellowship with one another.”

The 36th annual New York-Mississippi picnic in Central Park is June 13 from noon to 6 p.m. This year’s event will be held at Center Road at the 72nd Street and 5th Avenue entrance, which is between the Naumberg Bandshell and Sheeps Meadow. This year’s theme is Elvis in the Park, Celebrating 80 Years of The King of Rock & Roll. For a full schedule of events, visit the group’s website www.thenyms.org.

The 25th annual Mississippi on the Mall will be held June 20 in Washington D.C. at Henry Bacon Ball Field, located at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue NW. Live music will be provided, and fried catfish will be served. For more information, visit www.mississippisociety.org.

“The annual New York Picnic in the Park continues to grow each year, bringing out more and more of our Delta State alumni and friends living or visiting the area,” said Jordan Thomas, assistant alumni director. “I always enjoy meeting and visiting with everyone who has a connection to Delta State, and I am looking forward to seeing what the D.C. picnic has to offer.”

Scholarship funds have been established for all three areas. To donate to the scholarship funds, or to RSVP for the events, visit www.deltastategiving.org/alumniassociation. The picnics also have a Facebook event page under Statesmen Graduates.

Each picnic will have representatives from Mississippi including the majority of the state’s public and private institutions of higher learning. Delta State will have representatives from campus to provide updates, promotional items, information from admissions and other campus departments and much more. This also provides an opportunity for alumni to connect with their alma mater and refer a student to attend Delta State.

In true Magnolia State fashion, fried catfish and sweet tea will be served at all three events. The picnics celebrate all things Mississippi and give native Mississippians in the area a chance to get a little piece of home in the big city.
