Thacker Mountain Show Features Tribute to Duff Dorrough

As part of the Delta Music Institute’s yearly anniversary celebration, the award-winning Thacker Mountain Radio show will be broadcast live from DMI Studio A on Saturday, March 2 at 3:00 pm in the historic Whitfield building on the Delta State University campus. This year’s show will feature author Sheilah Hamilton Pantin, singer/songwriter Kate Campbell, Ol’ Skool Revue and a tribute to the memory of legendary Delta musician Duff Dorrough.

Thacker Mountain Radio is a live, unrehearsed broadcast that features author readings and a wide array of musical performances. The free show is normally recorded and broadcast weekly from Off Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi, but will once again relocate for this special show in Studio A at the Delta Music Institute as part of the DMI anniversary weekend fundraiser.

Thacker Mountain’s house band, the Yalobushwhackers, lost its leader, the Delta’s own Duff Dorrough, last fall. Musicians that offered music at his funeral, including Jessica Brent, Carl Massengale, Tricia Walker, Jan Gibson Smith, and more will reconvene to honor his memory in song. Joining the band that day will be former Tangents keyboard player and Delta native Jim “Fish” Michie.

The guest author for the special DMI taping of Thacker Mountain will be Sheilah Hamilton Pantin, the great-granddaughter of Mary Hamilton, author of Trials of the Earth, Hamilton’s autobiography about the hardships of living and settling the Delta at the turn of the 20th century.

As the daughter of a Baptist preacher from Sledge, Mississippi, musical guest Kate Campbell’s formative years were spent in the very core of the civil rights movement of the 1960′s, and the indelible experiences of those years have shaped her heart, character and convictions ever since. As a child of the South, her musical tastes were forged in the dampened, smoky fires of soul, R&B, Southern rock, country, and folk music. Kate Campbell’s music continues to inspire a growing audience. Her newest CD, 1000 Pound Machine, returns Campbell to the instrument of her childhood and enlisted Will Kimbrough to produce the eleven-song disc.

Thacker Mountain is hosted by Jim Dees and rebroadcast statewide on Mississippi Public Broadcasting at 7 pm on Saturday evenings.

The mission of the DMI is to provide students with a broad and thorough education in the technological, business, and creative areas of the music industry.

The public is encouraged to come be a part of this historic broadcast on March 2 at 3:00 pm as part of the DMI anniversary celebration. For more information on the weekend’s schedule and events, please call (662) 846-4579 or visit dmi.deltastate.edu.
