Division of Languages and Literature

The Division of Languages and Literature promotes passion for and knowledge of the English language. We teach students to read and write the English language with greater fluency, creativity, and accuracy. The Division offers four degrees in English: the B.A., the B.S.E., the M.A.L.S. and the M.Ed. The B.A. degree is available in three concentrations: English, creative writing, and philosophy. Students who receive the B.S.E. degree earn a Mississippi Class A Teaching License. The M.Ed. degree leads to a Mississippi Class AA Teaching License. The M.A.L.S degree is sometimes used to enter the teaching profession at a community college.

In fact, most of our graduates with an English degree enter the teaching profession at some level. Our students also do very well in graduate school. Many are accepted into graduate programs, win fellowships, and earn advanced degrees. Others go on to be journalists, writers, or lawyers.

As you pursue an English degree at Delta State, you will experience a traditional liberal-arts education on a public university campus. We feature a very accomplished faculty. The student-to-teacher ratio is low in every class, and the faculty is available for one-on-one support. This commitment to instruction can be seen daily in the classroom, in the Writing Center, and in faculty offices.
