James Harvey

Peter Jernberg accepts the award for Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.

James Peter Jernberg Jr., President and CEO of Jackson Academy, was named the Delta State University 2008 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. He was honored on October 31, at the annual DSU Alumni Service Awards Luncheon.

The Outstanding Alumnus of the Year award is presented to an alumnus who has made significant contributions to human or institutional programs in which a situation, an institution or a movement has been materially changed for the better because of that individual’s personal participation.

Jernberg, a native of Sumner, received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Delta State University.  He later earned AA and AAA certificates in Education Administration from DSU.  His professional career began at Indianola Academy, where he served as a teacher, coach, principal, and headmaster from 1967-1988.  In 1988, he was appointed headmaster of Jackson Academy and was named president and CEO in 2005.

As a student at Delta State, Jernberg was active in the Student Government Association, serving as vice president and president.  He also was president of Kappa Alpha Order.  As an alumnus, he has served as president of the Alumni Association and also as president of the DSU Development Foundation.

As a professional educator, he is currently a member of the board of trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and a member of the founding board for AdvancED, the governing body for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) and the North Central Association of College and Schools, Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. The eight-member board provides oversight for accreditation standards in 30 states and 65 foreign countries. He is chair–elect of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. Jernberg is a member of the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) board of trustees and is the first Mississippian elected president of SAIS.

Jernberg attributes his Delta State education and experiences, along with his faith, as cornerstones in the shaping of his personal and professional philosophies. They have a daughter, Jennifer Hughly, who resides in Charlottesville, Va. with her husband Brian, a medical student at the University of Virginia.

Boo: A Life in Baseball,
Well Lived

Ferriss and Brown

Coach Boo Ferriss and Rick Cleveland will host a book signing on Dec. 4th at the Delta State University Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni House from 4:00 - 7:00pm.

This is a story that begged to be told. Delta State's beloved Boo Ferriss won 46 games in his first two seasons (1945-46) as a major league pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Only Grover Cleveland Alexander (1911-12) won more, and he won just one more. In 1946, Ferriss won 25 games and helped the Red Sox run away from their arch-rival New York Yankees and reach the World Series. Ferriss pitched a shutout in Game 3, beating the St. Louis Cardinals. By July of 1947, Ferriss, a small-town country boy from the Mississippi Delta, had established himself as one of the most promising young pitchers in the history of America's pastime.

BookCoverAnd then one pitch essentially ended it all. On a cool, wet night in Cleveland, Ferriss felt a sharp pain in his right shoulder in the seventh inning when he snapped off a curve ball for a bases-loaded, inning-ending shutout. Incredibly, he finished the game and the shutout. By game's end, the shoulder was numb. The next day he couldn't lift his arm above his shoulder. Doctors didn't know it then, but he had torn the labrum in his right shoulder. He was never the same.

So instead of setting major league pitching records, Ferriss became a coach, first with the Red Sox and then back home in Mississippi. At Delta State, in the town of Cleveland, Ferriss created a baseball paradise and became one of the most beloved coaches college baseball has ever known.

Boo: A Life in Baseball, Well-Lived—a biography written by Rick Cleveland—is his story. Best-selling author John Grisham provides the foreword.

Coach Boo Ferriss and Rick Cleveland will host a book signing on Dec. 4 at the Delta State University Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni House. He will also be having a book signing at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame on December 9th from 4:00 – 7:00. For more information please contact the alumni office at 662-846-4660. To purchase the book online go to booferrissbook.com.

Delta State University honored State Sen. Bob M. Dearing of Natchez, by dedicating the Hall of Fame Room inside the Chadwick Dickson Intercollegiate Athletic Building to Dearing on Saturday, Nov. 1.  The Delta State alumnus was honored during an unveiling ceremony and reception prior to Delta State’s Homecoming football game.

Following opening remarks from Delta State Athletic Director, Jeremy McClain, Delta State President, Dr. John M. Hilpert, addressed the standing-room-only crowd stating, “When you talk about high achievers and outstanding graduates, a name that rises to the top category of every list is Bob Dearing.”

Hilpert thanked Dearing for his continued support of Delta State as an alumnus and through his actions in the legislature. “In short, Delta State owes this man a lot,” said Hilpert.  “Much of what this institution brags about today was launched from his senate seat.”
