Dr. James Robinson, a long time history professor, life long Bolivar Countian, and a 1968 Delta State graduate, noticed that the fountain in the atrium of Jobe Hall was not working and the water was stagnant and green. He contacted the new Vice President of Finance, Mr. Greg Redlin. Within a day or two the fountain had been cleaned and fresh water was flowing. He looked at the high brick walls surrounded by glass where history students could view the atrium area from first and second floors. Since the area had no plants or benches, students were not utilizing the area. With the support of his department chairman, Dr. Bo Morgan, he visited with Mr. Redlin about his idea of making the area a tribute to veterans. He saw a natural connection with “history” and “wars” and wanted students to realize that freedom should never be taken for granted….that many people have given their lives or fought for their country in order to preserve that freedom. Since the open air atrium is located just outside an auditorium, he also saw the potential to use the area for many receptions, music programs, photo opportunities. Recently the science department put a telescope there to view the heavens.
Because a project of this nature takes money, James contacted the alumni and foundation offices to seek guidance for possible funding. Coincidently, about that same time, the Golden Circle, which is the group of alumni who graduated 50 years or more, was planning their homecoming using the theme of “honoring veterans. It seemed a natural connection. Dr. Robinson met with alumni director, Vicki Fioranelli, and a committee of golden circle members and the “marriage” took place. Mr. Redlin, Dr. Hilpert, and the DSU administration supported the idea and the rest is history.
“We are quick to point out that this is a long range plan, says Dr. Robinson, but I believe in this project and so do many others.”
Because Dr. Robinson is a pied piper and his enthusiasm is contagious, many people have jumped on the band wagon to help. There is no list of those alumni, faculty, staff, or students who have served in the military, the names are going to have to be “gathered” and self reported. At present only 200 names have been reported. At some future date, these names will be appropriately displayed in the atrium. If you know of an alumnus, student, faculty or staff member of Delta State (living or deceased) who has served in any branch of the military, please report that name on the enclosed form.
A number of alumni and veterans have come forward with donations to make this project a reality, starting with Dr. Robinson himself. Mrs. Nancy Gerrard, president of Golden Circle and her husband, Hal Gerrard, a WWII veteran, made the second substantial donation as well as a $2000 donation was made from a former student and Viet Nam Veteran. No amount is too large or too small. If you are willing to make a tax deductible donation, please complete the enclosed form with a check made out to DSU Foundation, and mail to DSU, Box 3104, Cleveland, MS 38733.
