Probationary Period – Non Faculty

POLICY STATEMENT

Delta State University staff members have a six month probationary period in order to evaluate the employee’s performance and for rejecting any employee whose performance does not meet required work standards.

DEFINITIONS

Employee: This generally includes faculty and staff employees who are working on paid appointments by the University. It generally excludes students or temporary employees. For specific information on who is considered an employee, contact the Human Resources Department.

Supervisor: An employee designated by management who exercises major supervisory functions over another employee or employees. These functions include hiring, evaluating, assigning work, and disciplining employees.

PROCEDURES and RESPONSIBILITIES

General

All non-instructional employees who are appointed to full-time, part-time, or time-limited permanent positions will be in a probationary status for a minimum period of six (6) months that will begin on the first day of regular employment. This period is to be utilized by the supervisor for observing the employee’s work and for rejecting any employee whose performance does not meet required work standards.

Continuation of employment beyond six months signifies the end of the evaluation period unless extended by the employee’s supervisor. The introductory evaluation period may be extended one time upon written request and justification from the administrative officer of the department. The request must be by approved by the Director of Human Resources. The probationary period extension cannot exceed twelve (12) months.

An employee may be terminated at any time during the introductory evaluation period. New employees do not have access to the grievance procedures. At the end of the employee’s evaluation period, the Human Resources Office will send an evaluation form to the departmental supervisor to conduct an assessment of the employee’s performance. The completed form must be returned  to the Human Resources Office to become part of the employee’s records.

Employees Promoting/Transferring to Other Positions on Campus

Non-instructional employees who are promoted and/or transfer to full-time, part-time, or time-limited permanent positions must serve a six (6) month probationary period. The probationary period is an extension of the selection process and allows time for the effective evaluation and adjustment for the promoted/transferred employee.

The length of the promoted and/or transferred employee’s probationary period is to be no less than six (6) months and not more than twelve (12) months from the promoted/transferred date. Continuation of employment beyond six months signifies the end of the evaluation period unless extended by the employee’s supervisor. The probationary period may be extended, as necessary, but cannot exceed twelve (12) months.

A probationary employee may be discharged at any time during the probationary period, if the employee’s supervisor determines the employee’s performance does not meet departmental expectations. At the end of the employee’s evaluation period, the Human Resources Office will send an evaluation form to the departmental supervisor to conduct an assessment of the employee’s performance. The completed form must be returned to the Human Resources Office to become part of the employee’s records.

A promoted and/or transferred probationary employee does not have any grievance rights under DSU policy.
