{"id":998,"date":"2009-02-05T15:48:31","date_gmt":"2009-02-05T15:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2009\/02\/05\/pams-legacy-the-hazel-jimmy-sanders-sculpture-garden\/"},"modified":"2013-09-03T12:55:23","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T12:55:23","slug":"pams-legacy-the-hazel-jimmy-sanders-sculpture-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2009\/02\/pams-legacy-the-hazel-jimmy-sanders-sculpture-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Pams Legacy: The Hazel &amp; Jimmy Sanders Sculpture Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"270\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" src=\"\/Images\/univ_relations\/PamRemembered.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span>Shortly after her arrival at Delta State, Pam Mathews, <span>painter and late wife of former Delta State University President, David Potter, <\/span>had a dream of creating an artistic oasis on the campus<span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span>With the assistance of the Hazel and Jimmy Sanders endowment<\/span><span>, her dream has become a crown jewel of Delta State University. The <span>Hazel and Jimmy Sanders Sculpture Garden, set outside of the Bologna Performing Arts Center at Delta State has acquired sculptures to help develop the artistic oasis envisioned by Mathews.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><span>Now, recognized as the Pam Mathews Open-Air Sculpture Classroom, the garden&rsquo;s substantive pieces are chosen and purchased through a national competition every two years.&nbsp;Pieces to be judged in the competition are displayed in front of the Bologna Performing Arts Center for twenty-two months.&nbsp;At the end of this period, a winner is chosen.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>In 2004, the sculpture garden development and competition was halted by the death of Mathews in her fight to overcome cancer.&nbsp;Pam&rsquo;s vision was revived a few years later with the help of the project&rsquo;s facilitator Nan Sanders and her patron mother-in-law, Hazel Sanders.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>The sculpture garden features award winning sculptures including North Carolina artist Wayne Trapp&rsquo;s &ldquo;Wind Harp,&rdquo; which won the purchase award in 2000. &nbsp;In 2002, the award went to Glenn Zweygardt&rsquo;s sculpture &ldquo;Haiku Man&rdquo; was purchased. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>After her untimely death in 2004, Pam Mathew&rsquo;s devotion to sculpture has been honored with a 2008 commissioned sculpture by Glenn Zweygardt. &nbsp;&ldquo;Pam Remembered&rdquo; is a sculpture combining stainless steel, cast bronze, and cast glass.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>Zweygardt currently resides in New York as an emeritus Professor of Sculpture at the New York State College of Sculpture and Alfred University and continues to produce his art.&nbsp; He has many pieces in permanent collections across the nation, five of which Delta State &nbsp;has in its collection.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span>&ldquo;Pam Remembered&rdquo; will remain in the garden as a symbol of her legacy of bringing art into the daily life of the Delta State campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Shortly after her arrival at Delta State, Pam Mathews, painter and late wife of former Delta State University President, David Potter, had a dream of creating an artistic oasis&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":4197,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-998","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-general"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/998","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=998"}],"version-history":[{"count":12,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/998\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":41787,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/998\/revisions\/41787"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/4197"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=998"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=998"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=998"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
