Collaboration highlights impactful undergraduate research opportunity<\/em><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/em>CLEVELAND, Miss. \u2014 <\/strong>Delta State University is proud to announce the publication of a collaborative research paper in the Journal of Chemical Education<\/em> by Dr. Christopher Jurgenson, Sullivan-Outlaw associate professor of biochemistry, and recent graduate Alexis Hartley of Hazelhurst. The paper, titled \u201cCombining Predicted, Calculated, and Hands-On NMR Spectra to Enhance Instruction of Molecular Structure in Organic Chemistry,\u201d will appear in the journal\u2019s July 2025 edition and includes contributions from Dr. Larry Collins of Longwood University.<\/p>\n

The publication represents a significant achievement for Hartley, who graduated in May 2025. Her involvement in the project began as an undergraduate, working closely with Jurgenson on innovative approaches to teaching Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy\u2014an essential technique in organic chemistry.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing able to contribute to published research while still a student has been an incredible experience,\u201d said Hartley. She noted that combining different types of NMR spectra\u2014predicted, calculated, and experimental\u2014makes the subject more accessible and engaging for students. She added that she\u2019s excited to see how the study will benefit both learners and educators.<\/p>\n

Jurgenson emphasized the value of the hands-on experience afforded to Delta State students. \u201cWe use a benchtop NMR instrument designed specifically for instruction,\u201d he said. This approach, he explained, allows students to collect and interpret real spectral data\u2014a rare opportunity at the undergraduate level.<\/p>\n

He further noted that the new lab module integrates three key components: spectrum prediction using ChemDoodle software, theoretical calculation via Gaussian quantum chemistry software, and direct experimental data collection. According to Jurgenson, the combination of these elements led to \u201cimproved understanding, enhanced engagement, and greater confidence\u201d among students.<\/p>\n

The research was supported by the Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), which funded essential equipment and software for the project. \u201cThanks to INBRE\u2019s support,\u201d Jurgenson said, \u201cwe can continue offering research-informed instruction that prepares our students for scientific careers.\u201d<\/p>\n
