{"id":91591,"date":"2022-09-30T10:34:26","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T15:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=91591"},"modified":"2022-10-05T15:57:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T20:57:40","slug":"91591","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2022\/09\/91591\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet Mizuki Umebara: Delta State\u2019s new gateway to Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; full_screen_row_position=&#8221;middle&#8221; column_margin=&#8221;default&#8221; column_direction=&#8221;default&#8221; column_direction_tablet=&#8221;default&#8221; column_direction_phone=&#8221;default&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; row_border_radius=&#8221;none&#8221; row_border_radius_applies=&#8221;bg&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243; gradient_direction=&#8221;left_to_right&#8221; shape_divider_position=&#8221;bottom&#8221; bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221;][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_tablet=&#8221;inherit&#8221; column_padding_phone=&#8221;inherit&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; column_element_spacing=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; column_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_radius=&#8221;none&#8221; column_link_target=&#8221;_self&#8221; gradient_direction=&#8221;left_to_right&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243; tablet_width_inherit=&#8221;default&#8221; tablet_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; phone_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221; border_type=&#8221;simple&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>CLEVELAND, Miss.\u2014<\/strong>Delta State University has received the unique opportunity to introduce Japanese culture to the campus and community with its selection as a Japan Outreach Initiative host site for 2022-2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the designation, Mizuki Umebara, a Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) coordinator, has joined the Delta State family for the next two years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A joint initiative of the Japan Foundation and Laurasian Institution, the JOI program aims to promote awareness and understanding of Japan by bringing volunteer Japanese coordinators to regions of the U.S. where there is relatively limited access to Japanese culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the two-year program, the coordinators engage their American community through Japanese-themed programming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After undergoing an intensive matching process that examines the host site&#8217;s needs and the coordinator&#8217;s ability, Umebara said she was thrilled to be selected for Delta State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was really surprised when I found out that I was going to DSU, where you have the mascot of Fighting Okra, because my hometown Kochi has the second largest production of Okra in Japan!\u201d she shared. \u201cThere must have been a certain kind of turn of Fortune&#8217;s wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since her arrival on campus this Fall, Umebara&#8217;s first event was an International Moon Festival, hosted Sept. 12 in collaboration with DSU International Education; Dr. Maria Weber and the Wiley Planetarium, the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum, Delta State\u2019s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, Professor of Music Dr. Jung-Won Shin and students Vollorie Zhu, Ren Aoyama, Kaito Kamesawa and Lara Brix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The free event included a special lunar-themed planetarium show, rabbit origami demonstration, and traditional foods from Korea, China and Japan for China&#8217;s Mid-Autumn festival, Korea&#8217;s Chuseok holiday, and Japan&#8217;s Otsukimi festival. The important thing is that each activity should be enjoyable, and you will have the real essence of the culture at the end of the event,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her short-term goals include hosting a Japan Club meeting regularly at Delta State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Japan Club meetings will be open to DSU students and the general public,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope some people will eventually feel like coming to Japan in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Andy Novobilski said the program aids in Delta State\u2019s mission to prepare students for the real world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDelta State supports our students in their growth as informed citizens. Being connected to cultures of the world is critical to understanding people with diverse backgrounds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThrough the Japan Outreach Initiative, we have the opportunity to experience Japanese culture through the friendships we\u2019ll form with Ms. Mizuki Umebara. This is truly a gift to Delta State, Cleveland and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umebara said she expects to gain just as much from her stay in the Mississippi Delta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI personally have traveled to many countries and learned about different cultures.
