The true story of a protest, told by those who lived it, \u201cVoices from the Sit-In\u201d chronicles the thoughts, actions and outcomes of the 1969 sit-in on Delta State\u2019s campus by a courageous\u00a0group of African American students as they struggled for recognition, inclusion and fair treatment.<\/p>\n

Following screenings at nearly a dozen film festivals, the documentary is scheduled to air on MPB at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 5, and at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, August 7.<\/p>\n

The project was filmed at Delta State\u2019s Digital Media Arts Center under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Art Ted Fisher, the film\u2019s producer and director.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main aim of documentary, from my perspective, is to bring a true story to an audience in a way that resonates with that audience today, here and now,\u201d said Fisher. \u201cTo reach a large broadcast audience with this almost-forgotten history, to let that audience feel these personal accounts of what happened and what it meant, is just fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fisher said he is most excited for the students who helped to film the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important affirmation that if they tell the stories that matter to them there is an audience that will listen and care,\u201d he said. \u201cWe’re a small school, but we can have our voices heard in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 27-minute documentary brings to life an important story through lived experiences recalled across five decades.<\/p>\n

Starring in the documentary are protesters Maggie Daily Crawford, Mary Carter, Talmadge Davis and Muriel McCraney Lucas\u2014all of Cleveland, Miss.; Delta State\u2019s 1969 Student Government Association President James W. Powers; Delta State Professors Georgene Clark and Dr. Charles Westmoreland; and recent graduate Sykina Butts, who worked to record an oral history of the participants\u2019 stories.<\/p>\n

Since its debut in the summer of 2021, \u201cVoices from the Sit-In\u201d has been selected for screenings in 11 film festivals across the nation and Canada as well as local screening at Delta State\u2019s Bologna Performing Arts Center last fall.<\/p>\n

The documentary has earned accolades as Best Documentary Short Film at the Deep in the Heart Film Festival, the Fort Smith International Film Festival and, most recently, the Tribute Film Festival.<\/p>\n
