Students, faculty, staff, and community members met on the first floor of the H.L. Nowell Student Union to engage in conversation with DSU Police Chief Jeffrey Johns and Commander Tameka Curry.<\/p>\n

Sponsored by the University Police, a department of the Division of Student Affairs, all participants were treated to a free coffee from the on-campus Starbucks.<\/p>\n

In addition to Delta State police officers, Sheriff Kelvin Williams, Sr. and Chief Deputy Gerald Wesley Jr. of the Bolivar County Sheriff\u2019s Department were also in attendance to engage in conversation with the Delta State community.<\/p>\n

Johns said the event allowed students and community members to ask questions and express any concerns without the hassle of scheduling a meeting or feeling pressed for time.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople always see us walking around in the union or the cafeteria, but they rarely have the chance to speak to us one-on-one,\u201d explained Johns.<\/p>\n

Curry added it\u2019s important for individuals to understand that individuals in law enforcement are still people underneath their badges.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they see officers on campus, we want students to feel comfortable enough to have a conversation with us,\u201d said Curry.<\/p>\n

Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Eddie Lovin said the event was a chance to help students and the community engage and connect with the on-campus law enforcement team. He hopes the event will continue to grow with more local law enforcement agencies attending the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will help DSU students explore opportunities for their professional growth while providing an outlet for others to interact, engage and appreciate those who serve in law enforcement,\u201d said Lovin.<\/p>\n
