{"id":87449,"date":"2021-03-09T17:11:19","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T23:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=87449"},"modified":"2021-03-18T12:27:40","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T17:27:40","slug":"7th-annual-winning-the-race-conference-returns-march-28-30-themed-make-the-invisible-visible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2021\/03\/7th-annual-winning-the-race-conference-returns-march-28-30-themed-make-the-invisible-visible\/","title":{"rendered":"7th Annual Winning the Race Conference returns March 28-30, themed \u201cMake the Invisible, Visible\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CLEVELAND, Miss.\u2014<\/strong> Delta State University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2014\/06\/delta-state-honored-with-civil-rights-and-social-justice-award\/\">award-winning<\/a>\u00a0race relations conference,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/WINNINGTHERACE\">Winning the Race<\/a>, returns to campus for a seventh year, March 28-30, 2021.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The 2021 virtual conference, \u201cWinning the Race: Make the Invisible, Visible\u201d, will highlight systems and cultural norms that insulate stereotypes and inequalities and challenge the way things have always been done. Registration is free and available online at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/winningtherace\">www.deltastate.edu\/winningtherace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event will be highlighted by Lawrence Ross, best-selling author of \u201cBlackballed: The Black and White Politics of Race on Americas Campuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross\u2019 \u201cBlackballed\u201d lecture on campus racism has been highly requested over the past four years, with visits to more than 200 schools.\u00a0 He has written seven books \u2013 including \u201cThe Divine Nine\u201d \u2013 and has lectured at over 700 colleges and universities. LaForge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dialogue and engagements of this annual event stimulate important awareness and action in the race relations arena.\u00a0 Where better than in the welcoming, learning environment of a university campus \u2013 especially in the Delta of Mississippi \u2013 to host such a timely and topical forum?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LaForge continued, \u201cThis year\u2019s conference spotlights unique programming for our students, and I hope that they will take full advantage of this terrific opportunity to hear thoughtful speakers and engage in enlightening discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/winningtherace\">virtual conference<\/a> will also highlight participants in Delta State University\u2019s 1969 Sit-ins as a featured discussion for the President\u2019s Roundtable.<\/p>\n<p>On March 10, 1969, a group of 52 students staged a sit-in demonstration in front of Delta State University\u2019s President\u2019s Office to protest the disregard of a list of demands previously presented to the administration. The students were arrested and imprisoned for the night at Parchman State Penitentiary and later taken to the Bolivar County Court House where they were released on $200 bonds.<\/p>\n<p>The actions of the students have now been seen as a turning point for race relations at Delta State University and the demonstration has since received the 2020 Elbert R.
