COVID-19 vaccine site at Delta State brings hope to local residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CLEVELAND, Miss.\u2014<\/strong>77-year-old Blondell Travis has been closely watching the global COVID-19 pandemic unfold over for the past year. So, when the Renova, Miss., resident heard that there would be a vaccination opportunity just a few miles north of her home on the campus of Delta State University, she didn\u2019t waste any time making an appointment.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID doesn\u2019t care what age you are\u2014young or old it\u2019s out there, so you need to protect yourself,\u201d said Travis, who received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine on Tuesday, Feb. 23\u2014the first official day of operation for the Bolivar County vaccination site at DSU.<\/p>\n<p>Not only was Travis able to receive the vaccine locally, she also received a free ride courtesy of the Bolivar County Council on Aging, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just wonderful,\u201d said Travis, as she proudly received her \u201cI Got My COVID Vaccine\u201d sticker. \u201cIt makes me feel good to know that they\u2019re thinking about and care for the people that\u2019s here in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_87362\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87362\" class=\"wp-image-87362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine3-729x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine3-729x430.jpg 729w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine3-768x453.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine3-1024x604.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine3-203x120.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine3.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-87362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">77-year-old Blondell Travis of Renova, Miss. as she receives her vaccination sticker.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Bolivar County vaccination site was made possible through a partnership with the Bolivar County Board of Supervisors, the Bolivar County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the City of Cleveland, Delta State and the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH).<\/p>\n<p>According to Jim Craig, senior deputy and director of health protection at the MSDH, about 150 Moderna vaccination opportunities were available Tuesday at the drive-through site, hosted at DSU\u2019s Horace McCool Stadium.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-87364 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine5-681x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine5-681x430.jpg 681w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine5-768x485.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine5-1024x647.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine5-190x120.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/02\/Vaccine5.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 409px) 100vw, 409px\" \/>\u201cWe started pretty busy here in the morning,\u201d said Craig. \u201cThe site is really well designed and people are moving through at a good pace\u2026from the time they say hello to the time they say goodbye has averaged about 35 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delta State alumnus Steven Simpson (\u201987) of Cleveland was among those to receive a seamless experience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelta State has always been able to fill a gap in the community,\u201d said Simpson, who traveled internationally as an engineering project manager prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a challenge to find a vaccination opportunity, so when this one popped up that\u2019s when I was able to receive one. I understand the value of being able to safely go across borders and move through airports and public transit. In fact, I initially decided that I wasn\u2019t going to get it because of all of the misinformation and things you see on social media. But then I realized that we didn\u2019t know a lot about the other vaccines we received when we were younger either,\u201d she said. \u201cI would encourage everyone to get the vaccine so that we can get back to some sense of normalcy in our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bolivar County Emergency Management Director Michael Lamb said plans are in the works to have the vaccination site available to Bolivar County citizens for several more months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll be operating on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., hopefully throughout the summer,\u201d said Lamb. \u201cWe encourage eligible individuals to make an appointment through the MSDH website.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the MSDH website, teachers and staff in K-12 schools, daycares and preschools are now eligible to schedule an appointment, as are personnel involved in law enforcement, emergency management, fire response and other first responders.<\/p>\n<p>Adults 65 and over, and those ages 18-64 with certain chronic health conditions remain eligible for vaccination in addition to healthcare personnel and EMTs\/paramedics.<\/p>\n<p>All appointments for vaccinations at the Bolivar County site must be made through MSDH\u2019s vaccine appointment system and will be based on the eligibility guidelines established by the agency.
