Her efforts have earned her the distinction of being named DSU\u2019s recipient for the 2021 Mississippi State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each year, the Mississippi IHL Board of Trustees celebrate Black History Month by hosting its annual Diversity and Inclusion Awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>During this year\u2019s virtual ceremony, Harbin was among honorees praised for serving as a role model and strong advocate of diversity on their respective campuses and within Mississippi. The honorees from each state university were nominated for the award by the president\/chancellor of the institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to be selected as Delta State University\u2019s nominee for\u00a0the 2021 IHL Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award. To be recognized by\u00a0colleagues for dedication and service to ensuring equity for all persons both on campus and within the community is truly humbling,\u201d said Harbin, who serves as the chair and associate professor of management for DSU\u2019s Division of Management, Marketing and Business Administration within the College of Business and Aviation.<\/p>\n<p>Harbin believes that promoting inclusion and awareness of diversity is an integral part of the education process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy focus has always been to assist in empowering and developing others to be successful and effective in their life and community,\u201d she said. \u201cThrough diversity and inclusion efforts, our students are afforded the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and gain skills that will better prepare them for their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A resident of Boyle, Miss., Harbin received her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Mississippi, a Master of Science in Community Development from Delta State, and a Ph.D. in Human Capital Development from the University of Southern Mississippi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CLEVELAND, Miss.\u2014 Dr. Tomeka Harbin is committed to advancing diversity and inclusion on the campus of Delta State University and within the community.
