{"id":87278,"date":"2021-02-10T10:42:07","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T16:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=87278"},"modified":"2021-02-10T10:42:07","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T16:42:07","slug":"division-of-languages-and-literature-announces-2021-da-writing-contest-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2021\/02\/division-of-languages-and-literature-announces-2021-da-writing-contest-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Division of Languages and Literature announces 2021 \u201cDa\u201d writing contest winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CLEVELAND, Miss.<\/strong><strong>\u2014<\/strong> Delta State University\u2019s Division of Languages and Literature is pleased to announce the 2021 winners of the annual writing contest hosted by \u201cDa,\u201d DSU\u2019s student literary magazine.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDa\u201d (formerly named \u201cConfidante\u201d) provides a forum to celebrate emerging talents in creative writing and visual arts. Published annually, the student-run magazine showcases student poetry, short fiction, one-act plays, formal and informal essays and art.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners for the Poetry category are Sykina Butts of Kilmichael, Miss., who won first place for her piece \u201cShould\u2026JAHCAH,\u201d and Kelly Foster of Flowood, Miss., who won second place for her piece \u201c2AM Plastered to My Brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the Fiction category include Foster, who won first place for her entry \u201cNightlight,\u201d and second place winner Jack Vernon of Southaven, Miss. for his entry \u201cAbide with Me Fast Falls the Eventide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Formal Essay winners include Foster, who snagged another first-place award for her essay \u201cBradstreet, LeGuin, and the Unification of Distortion and Reality,\u201d and Vernon, who placed second for his essay \u201cGod\u2019s Not Dead; He\u2019s a Fat Lady the Use of Christ Figures in J. D. Salinger\u2019s Nine Stories and Franny and Zooey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Creative Nonfiction category, Riley Hardin of Olive Branch, Miss., received first place for her entry, \u201cIn Stinky Yamper I Trust,\u201d as well as second place for her entry, entitled \u201cYea, She\u2019s Mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlacing in a creative writing contest is not an easy accomplishment, and any writer that has the courage to enter one is worth reading,\u201d said Mike Smith, interim chair of DSU\u2019s Division of Languages and Literature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelta State has a long history of producing and encouraging new writing and I am delighted to see this tradition continue in such powerful and interesting work. Every writer listed here, and every writer who entered this year\u2019s contest ought to feel proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Division of Languages and Literature will host a virtual reading and awards ceremony for the winners at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021 via Zoom. To register to attend the event, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/DAreadingawards\">www.deltastate.edu\/DAreadingawards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Winning works have been submitted for consideration in the Southern Literary Festival national contest, and all winners are invited to attend the 2021 conference hosted virtually by North Georgia University in May.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, winning works will be published in a print anthology of works from the past three years. All submissions to \u201cDa\u201d are considered for publication online through \u201cThe Delta Statement\u201d student newspaper website.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 1972 by undergraduate students at Delta State University, \u201cConfidante\u201d was renamed \u201cDa\u201d in 2014 in honor of long-time professor and former chair Dorothy Shawhan\u2019s contributions and leadership in the Division of Languages &amp; Literature.<\/p>\n<p>Students interested in working on the \u201cDa\u201d staff are encouraged to sign up for ENG 220, Student Publications Workshop, where they can gain experience in editing, writing, and producing a literary magazine and online student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cDa\u201d Writing Contest is open to all undergraduates who do not have a bachelor\u2019s degree and are currently enrolled at Delta State. Graduate students work may be submitted for publication but will not be considered for the contest. Entries must not have been published in any publication with the exception of The Delta Statement. Categories for submission include: poetry, fiction, one-act plays, formal essays and informal essays.<\/p>\n<p>Monetary prizes are awarded to the winners in each of these five categories.
