The documentary film\u00a0\u201cPicture\u00a0a\u00a0Scientist\u201d\u00a0challenges viewers\u2019 perceptions with candid profiles of three women who\u00a0are flourishing in male-dominated STEM fields\u00a0and opening doors for others.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Bologna Performing\u00a0Arts Center will host virtual screenings of\u00a0\u201cPicture\u00a0a\u00a0Scientist\u201d\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0special Q&amp;A\u00a0with the film\u2019s co-directors, Sharon Shattuck\u00a0and Ian Cheney, who will present\u00a0a\u00a0Q&amp;A\u00a0with the\u00a0audience.<\/p>\n<p>The public is invited to screen the event on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020\u00a0at 3:00 p.m.\u00a0and Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020\u00a0at 7:00 p.m. Free registration for the virtual screenings is\u00a0available on the BPAC\u2019s website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bolognapac.com\/\">www.bolognapac.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPicture\u00a0a\u00a0Scientist\u201d\u00a0follows three women working in the sciences: Nancy Hopkins, Ph.D.,\u00a0a\u00a0molecular biologist\u00a0and professor of biology; Raychelle Burks, Ph.D.,\u00a0a professor of\u00a0analytical chemistry;\u00a0and Jane Willenbring, Ph.D.,\u00a0a\u00a0geomorphologist\u00a0and professor of geology.<\/p>\n<p>By overcoming harassment, institutional discrimination,\u00a0and years of subtle slights they\u00a0and their peers\u00a0are revolutionizing the culture of science to create\u00a0a\u00a0more diverse, equitable field that is open to\u00a0all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s\u00a0a\u00a0systemic\u00a0and invisible discrimination\u00a0against women,\u201d Hopkins says in the film. \u201cIf you don\u2019t have women, you\u2019ve lost half of the best people\u2026This is worth fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival,\u00a0\u201cPicture\u00a0a\u00a0Scientist\u201d\u00a0was hailed by Science Magazine\u00a0as \u201csweeping in scope yet intimately compelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director\/Producer Sharon Shattuck is\u00a0an Emmy-nominated documentary film director\u00a0and podcast host (Conviction:\u00a0American Panic from Gimlet\/Spotify).<\/p>\n<p>Director\/Producer Ian Cheney is\u00a0an Emmy-nominated\u00a0and Peabody\u00a0Award-winning documentary filmmaker. He has completed nine feature documentaries, including King Corn (2007), Search for General Tso (2014),\u00a0Picture\u00a0Character (2019)\u00a0and Thirteen Ways (2019).<\/p>\n<p>This event is made possible through the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers,\u00a0a\u00a0South\u00a0Arts program. Since its inception in 1975, Southern Circuit has brought some of best independent filmmakers\u00a0and their films from\u00a0around the country to communities throughout the South.<\/p>\n<p>The program is supported by the National Endowment for the\u00a0Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Admission to the virtual screenings\u00a0are FREE and includes\u00a0a\u00a0Q&amp;A\u00a0with the filmmakers following the film.
