Acclaimed painter Richard Kelso became the latest Delta State University representative to receive a Mississippi Governor\u2019s Arts Award. He was one of five recipients in the class of 2020<\/a> to be recognized at the 32nd<\/sup> Governor\u2019s Arts Awards ceremony held at the Old Capitol Museum in downtown Jackson on Feb. 6. Kelso\u2019s commendation was for excellence in visual art. The awards are presented in partnership with the Mississippi Arts Commission.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in Cleveland, Miss., Kelso<\/a> graduated from Cleveland High School and then from Delta State in 1970 with a degree in art. At DSU, he studied under the renowned painter Sammy Britt, praised for his command of natural light and color use. Kelso also learned from master colorist Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Mass.<\/p>\n

Kelso\u2019s oeuvre \u201cfocuses on capturing the beauty, time, and place of Mississippi\u2019s land,\u201d according to Mississippi Governor\u2019s Arts Awards press materials. \u201cA full-time artist for more than 30 years, Kelso\u2019s work is found in corporate and private collections across the Southeast as well as the permanent collections of the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art,\u201d the statement continues. Kelso earned an MFA in painting from the University of Mississippi in 1980 and taught at Millsaps College and Meridian Community College. He has been based in Jackson since 1987 and is represented by Fischer Galleries.<\/p>\n

Previous Delta State recipients of Mississippi Governor\u2019s Arts Awards include Steve Azar (2018), a Greenville native, 1987 DSU alumnus (B.B.A. management), songwriter\/recording artist\/music producer, and 2017 music and culture ambassador for the state of Mississippi; Britt (2017), who taught at Delta State for more than 35 years; and the Bologna Performing Arts Center (2002).<\/p>\n

The Mississippi Governor\u2019s Arts Awards, established in 1988, honor people and organizations that make significant contributions in the arts in the state. The public nominates potential recipients, and a jury of community arts leaders and industry peers selects the winners.<\/p>\n

The other 2020 recipients are ballet dancer\/teacher Henry Danton, lifetime achievement in dance; folk-rock troubadour Steve Forbert, excellence in music; the gospel group Jackson Southernaires, lifetime achievement in music; and Tougaloo College Art Collections, preservation of the arts.<\/p>\n

Notable earlier recipients include Morgan Freeman, John Grisham, Eudora Welty, Richard Ford, Elizabeth Spencer, Natasha Trethewey, Shelby Foote, Stephen E. Ambrose, Beth Henley, Tig Notaro, Leontyne Price, B. B. King, Bo Diddley, Marty Stuart, Cassandra Wilson, the Craftsmen\u2019s Guild of Mississippi, University Press of Mississippi, Malaco Records, and the Greenville Arts Council.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
