{"id":84046,"date":"2019-07-23T11:58:45","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T16:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=84046"},"modified":"2019-07-29T08:17:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T13:17:59","slug":"delta-state-presents-at-national-council-of-teachers-of-englishs-annual-elate-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2019\/07\/delta-state-presents-at-national-council-of-teachers-of-englishs-annual-elate-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Delta State Presents at  National Council of Teachers of English&#8217;s Annual ELATE Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Gabriel Scala, chair of the Division of Languages and Literature and coordinator of the English Education Program, and three recent graduates of the B.S.E. in English education program at Delta State led a roundtable discussion at the National Council of Teachers of English annual English Language Arts Teacher Educators Conference at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville on July 19.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The four-day conference theme was activism and advocacy and the panel title was, &#8220;We\u2019re Starting with Mississippi: Teacher Candidates Discuss Their Plans to Change the World.&#8221; During the discussion, Scala outlined the recent curricular changes made to the B.S.E. program, specifically those giving the program a social justice emphasis, and the recent graduates\u2014the first cohort to graduate from the newly revised curriculum\u2014discussed the impact of those curricular changes on their approach to students and their decisions to stay in Mississippi and teach in Mississippi public schools.<\/p>\n<p>The recent DSU graduates to participate were:<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Dickson, BSE 2019, incoming 8th grade English teacher at Senatobia Middle School<br \/>\nAK Habig, BSE 2019, incoming 10th grade English teacher at Cleveland Central High School<br \/>\nJack Reddecliff, BSE 2019, incoming 7th grade English teacher at Colmer Middle School<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_84047\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84047\" class=\"wp-image-84047\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/engl-two-323x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/engl-two-323x430.jpg 323w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/engl-two-90x120.jpg 90w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/engl-two.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-84047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top to bottom: Habig, Reddecliff, Dickson, and Scala smile for the camera at the conference.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am very proud of these former students, new teachers, and world changers,&#8221; said Scala. &#8220;They engaged in meaningful conversation about their experiences, what they\u2019ve learned, and their hopes for their students.
