{"id":83707,"date":"2019-06-12T08:42:37","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T13:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=83707"},"modified":"2019-06-12T08:42:37","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T13:42:37","slug":"documentarian-matteo-zengaro-19-receives-arkansas-traveler-certificate-for-illuminating-italian-american-culture-in-the-delta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2019\/06\/documentarian-matteo-zengaro-19-receives-arkansas-traveler-certificate-for-illuminating-italian-american-culture-in-the-delta\/","title":{"rendered":"Documentarian Matteo Zengaro \u201919 Receives Arkansas Traveler Certificate for Illuminating Italian-American Culture in the Delta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Documentarian Matteo Zengaro \u201919 received an Arkansas Traveler Certificate for helping preserve Italian-American culture in the Delta through his short films, \u201cCon Gusto!\u201d and \u201cI Sopravvissuti,\u201d at the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock to kick off the second annual Arkansas Italian Food and Culture Festival, held in late April at the Clinton Presidential Center, where he world-premiered the former and replayed the latter.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of aspects to culture, so I like to share little pieces of that in my films,\u201d said Zengaro, who majored in psychology at Delta State and who will pursue an M.A. in journalism at the University of Alabama. \u201cI hope people come away with a greater appreciation and understanding of some unique stories or perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharing stories that audiences can relate to is what caught the attention of Arkansas Italian Food and Culture Festival Cofounder Patrick Presley. He nominated Zengaro for the award after having played \u201cI Sopravvissuti\u201d at the inaugural event in April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI first became aware of Matteo\u2019s work just over two years ago as I was searching for, in particular, young Italian-Americans who had an interest in keeping the culture and traditions alive, especially in the American South,\u201d said Presley, who also is director of development and media relations at the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Central Arkansas. \u201cI was then, as I am today, inspired that someone in his 20s has such a devotion to helping both preserve and spread the heritage and history of Italians in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zengaro\u2019s films\u2014the 12-minute \u201cCon Gusto!,\u201d which depicts Italian cuisine in the Mississippi Delta and Little Rock; and the 31-minute \u201cI Sopravvissuti\u201d (\u201cThe Survivors\u201d), which follows some of the great wave of Italian immigrants to the region from the late 1800s and early 1900s and the determination of their descendants to carry on the cultural traditions\u2014capture the \u201cspirit and essence\u201d of the festival, Presley continued, and \u201ctransformed and generated more interest in Italian-American history in Arkansas and the Delta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-83709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Matteo_MoviePoster-3-332x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Matteo_MoviePoster-3-332x430.jpg 332w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Matteo_MoviePoster-3-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Matteo_MoviePoster-3-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Matteo_MoviePoster-3-93x120.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-83710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Con-Gusto-764x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"606\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Con-Gusto-764x430.jpg 764w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Con-Gusto-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Con-Gusto-213x120.jpg 213w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/Con-Gusto.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/>Zengaro\u2019s fascination in the subject began as a teenager. \u201cThis was something that I wanted to do ever since my family moved to the Delta when I was 16 years old because I never really knew about the Italian culture here,\u201d he said. \u201cIn \u2018I Sopravvissuti,\u2019 I wanted to reflect what it meant to share the Italian-American experience in the Mississippi Delta because it\u2019s not really well known.\u201d The motivation for \u201cCon Gusto!\u201d started with his grandfather, once a chef in Italy. \u201cBeing around him and the things he could make just blew my mind,\u201d he recalled; Zengaro interviewed professional cooks and amateur enthusiasts on the culinary art form.<\/p>\n<p>The Arkansas Traveler Certificate is the latest honor for Zengaro. He earlier was one of seven aspiring filmmakers to receive a $7,500 grant from the Russo Brothers Italian American Film Forum to explore Italian-American culture, in his case, for \u201cI Sopravvissuti.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accolades don\u2019t surprise Dr. Leslie Griffin, dean of DSU\u2019s College of Education and Human Sciences, which screened \u201cI Sopravvissuti\u201d in fall 2017. \u201cPreparing culturally sensitive students is a common thread across our programs,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cMatteo\u2019s interest in how and why a group of people chose this place as their home\u2014and persisted in thriving here during challenging times\u2014is closely aligned with his preparation in the field of psychology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Arkansas Traveler Award winners this year were Luciano Castiello, brand ambassador for Banfi wine, and Kevin and Sue McCarthy, hosts of the \u201cTravel Planners\u201d radio show. Dating to 1941 and approved by the governor, the certificate recognizes out-of-state visitors who contribute to \u201cthe progress, enjoyment or well-being of the State of Arkansas or to her people,\u201d according to the website for the Arkansas Secretary of State.<\/p>\n<p><em>Written by <\/em><em>Elisabetta Zengaro \u201915 (B.A. journalism), M.S. \u201918 (sport and human performance), a Ph.D. student in communication and information sciences at the University of Alabama. <\/em><em>The Delta State alumna is the sister and occasional filmmaking partner of Matteo.
