{"id":72616,"date":"2016-10-27T13:23:50","date_gmt":"2016-10-27T18:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=72616"},"modified":"2017-07-11T07:47:51","modified_gmt":"2017-07-11T12:47:51","slug":"student-panel-focuses-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2016\/10\/student-panel-focuses-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Student panel focuses on technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Office of Information Technology hosted a Connected Learner Panel on Wednesday in celebration of Connected Educator Month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Five Delta State students participated in the discussion\u00a0moderated by Dr. Carolyn Casale, assistant professor in the\u00a0College of Education and Human Sciences.\u00a0The topic\u00a0was \u201cConnected Learners: Perspectives in Learning with Technology from Millennials and Gen Z.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The discussion explored how students representing these generations respond to technologies used in online and face-to-face class environments. Panelists shared their motivations in learning with technology, expectations for using technologies in class, and gave insight as to what the future of technology should look like to prepare them for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was very interesting to learn how students see things,\u201d said Casale. &#8220;Sometimes, as instructors, we aren\u2019t aware of the positive impact we are having. This was very useful information.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Casale posed several questions to uncover ways instructors are using technology to improve student participation and performance. Students mirrored recent research by indicating that they would benefit from more technology training tutorials, intermittent social media activity, and tools to develop their online research skills. Panelists agreed that campus instructors were moving in the right direction for engaging learners, technology diversity and interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI am shy and sometimes afraid to speak in class,\u201d said social work major Garyanna Simmons, \u201cBut working online in discussions improved my confidence to speak up and participate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Blended formats work best for me because we like the convenience of online, but we need that occasional face-to-face,&#8221;said MBA and accounting graduate student Hafsa Alharoon.\u00a0\u201cInteraction with the professor is very important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nicole House, director of instructional technology, said understanding the current technological needs is imperative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGen Z consists of digital natives born between the mid-1990s and 2010, and they are becoming the majority in our college classrooms,\u201d said House. \u201cSo if we understand their needs and expectations, we can develop new teaching strategies to challenge them as well as prepare them to work in a world that requires technical proficiency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Learn more about\u00a0Connected Educator Month at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectededucators.org\">http:\/\/www.connectededucators.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of Information Technology hosted a Connected Learner Panel on Wednesday in celebration of Connected Educator Month.
