{"id":69568,"date":"2016-03-14T08:13:57","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T13:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=69568"},"modified":"2016-03-14T08:13:57","modified_gmt":"2016-03-14T13:13:57","slug":"students-and-faculty-present-at-mississippi-academy-of-sciences-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2016\/03\/students-and-faculty-present-at-mississippi-academy-of-sciences-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Students and faculty present at Mississippi Academy of Sciences meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Delta State University environmental science students and professors recently presented five scientific posters at the 80th annual Mississippi Academy of Sciences meeting held in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>The yearly meeting is comprised of addresses, symposia, workshops, scientific papers and exhibits grouped by division.\u00a0Delta State\u2019s posters highlighted research the students had conducted over the past academic year. Four of the posters were presented in\u00a0the ecology and evolutionary section, and the fifth was presented\u00a0in\u00a0the cellular, molecular and developmental section.<\/p>\n<p>Participating students included Emily Bodin, Megan Clark, Shawnee Gundry, Brittany Husley and Christine Beck. Delta State professors included Dr. Nina L. Baghai-Riding and Dr. AHM Ali Reza.<\/p>\n<p>Presentation titles included \u201cHabitat use and food habits of coyote in Dahomey Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi;\u201d \u201cStorm drain study on Delta State University Campus, Cleveland, Mississippi;\u201d \u201cCarbon dioxide\/leaf peel study for three plant species in the Mississippi Delta;\u201d \u201cAnalysis of a palynological sample from the Bucatunna Formation, southwestern Alabama;\u201d and \u201cMolecular function of selenoproteins in <em>Rickettsia parkeri<\/em> survival within the tick host.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abstracts for the presentations can be found in the Mississippi Academy of Sciences journal of abstracts at <a href=\"http:\/\/msacad.org\/mas-journal\/current-abstract\">http:\/\/msacad.org\/mas-journal\/current-abstract<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also announced\u00a0at the conference, Reza was selected as the 2016-17 chair of the division of ecology and evolutionary biology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Being elected as the chair of one MAS\u2019s major divisions, ecology and evolutionary biology, is an extreme honor and recognition of our contribution to science in the state,&#8221; said Reza. &#8220;I am privileged to represent the Department of Biological Sciences and Delta State University in general. I strongly believe this position will help us work closely with other scientists in the state. This will also help our students connect with other scientists\u00a0and possibly build a meaningful professional career in the future.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Reza, there\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">were more than 750 participants this year, which is the\u00a0largest\u00a0gathering of any scientific community in the state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, all of the presentations were very well received and the students had a positive experience,\u201d said Baghai-Riding. \u201cThe\u00a0students\u00a0also attended professional talks, networked with other professionals and were engaged in scientific workshops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information concerning the environmental science program at Delta State University, contact Baghai-Riding at <a href=\"mailto:nbaghai@deltastate.edu\">nbaghai@deltastate.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delta State University environmental science students and professors recently presented five scientific posters at the 80th annual Mississippi Academy of Sciences meeting held in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
