{"id":69136,"date":"2016-02-12T13:47:37","date_gmt":"2016-02-12T19:47:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=69136"},"modified":"2016-02-12T13:47:37","modified_gmt":"2016-02-12T19:47:37","slug":"african-american-student-council-hosts-black-history-month-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2016\/02\/african-american-student-council-hosts-black-history-month-events\/","title":{"rendered":"African American Student Council hosts Black History Month events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The African American Student Council at Delta State University has been busy hosting events in honor of Black History Month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This year&#8217;s theme is &#8220;Honoring the Past, Inspiring Our Future.&#8221; Visit the group&#8217;s Facebook page to view the full schedule of activities at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Delta-State-University-African-American-Student-Council-1675536429393413\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Delta-State-University-African-American-Student-Council-1675536429393413<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">AASC\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">exists to allow the participation of all people in the promotion of black cultural, intellectual and social interests at the university and the surrounding community.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Established<\/span>\u00a0on campus\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">several years ago, membership is open to every undergraduate and graduate<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">student at the university<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The council works to uplift the conscious awareness of the African American student politically, culturally, and intellectually; promote leadership and scholarship; encourage positive contributions to the community; stimulate the interest of African American students in university affairs and functions; and to cultivate an increased awareness and appreciation of ethnicity and the contributions of African Americans and others throughout history to the benefit of all mankind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">AASC will hold its fall induction ceremony<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Feb.\u00a024 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lena Roberts Sillers Chapel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Delta State University benefits from the on-campus presence of African American Student Council as the group works to<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">further explore and acknowledge the scope of cultural diversity within<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">university and community from many perspectives,&#8221; said advisor Stedmond Ware.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">AASC<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">offers opportunities to work together toward planning university events, promoting unity on campus and in the community, and enhancing African American culture.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The group\u00a0has actively been involved in promoting awareness of breast cancer and sickle cell anemia by providing information to students, and financially contributing to the Delta Cotton Belles of Greenville.
