{"id":68805,"date":"2016-01-14T11:58:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T17:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=68805"},"modified":"2016-01-14T11:58:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-14T17:58:35","slug":"frederick-douglass-performance-coming-to-jobe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2016\/01\/frederick-douglass-performance-coming-to-jobe\/","title":{"rendered":"Frederick Douglass performance coming to Jobe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Join the Delta State University Diversity Committee for a free performance of &#8220;The Starry Road to Freedom,&#8221; a one-man show about Frederick Douglass, one of the most prominent civil rights figures and one of the most influential lecturers and authors in American history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Actor Darius Wallace will perform the\u00a0show Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in\u00a0Jobe Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The Starry Road to Freedom&#8221; takes the audience on a journey with Douglass,\u00a0a legendary\u00a0African American leader.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Douglass was born a slave and ultimately found his true freedom\u00a0in forgiveness. The performance reconstructs the complexity and radiance of Douglass\u2019 spirit on his path to becoming the leader who inspired President Lincoln and countless thousands who thronged to hear him speak. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wallace captures Douglass\u2019 essence,\u00a0humor, outrage and charisma, but the most powerful message delivered in the story is how education\u00a0completely transformed Frederick Douglass\u2019 life. The show\u00a0includes singing, monologues and poetry. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wallace is a native of Flint, Michigan. He began his acting career with the Michigan Shakespeare festival as Caliban in &#8220;The Tempest.&#8221; He has traveled the country performing as a solo performer as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Langston Hughes. Wallace is currently with the Tennessee Shakespeare company and the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, Tennessee. His television\u00a0credits include ABC&#8217;s &#8220;Nashville.&#8221; His Film credits include &#8220;Nothing But The Truth,&#8221; and he is the voice of the documentary &#8220;The Invaders.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The performance is sponsored by the DSU Diversity Committee and is free and open to the public.
