{"id":67241,"date":"2015-09-02T15:23:31","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T20:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=67241"},"modified":"2015-09-02T15:23:31","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T20:23:31","slug":"turner-draws-large-crowd-for-colloquia-address","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2015\/09\/turner-draws-large-crowd-for-colloquia-address\/","title":{"rendered":"Turner draws large crowd for colloquia address"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Joseph Jackson Turner Jr., CEO at First Sun Management Corporation, which owns 50 Wendy\u2019s franchises in the Southeast, drew a packed house\u00a0Tuesday\u00a0as the first speaker of the semester for the\u00a0Delta State University Colloquia Distinguished Speakers Lecture Series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Faculty, staff, students and the community filled Jobe Hall Auditorium to capacity to take advice from one of the region&#8217;s most successful entrepreneurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During his\u00a0speech, titled \u201cJust the Right Amount of Ketchup\u2026Life Lessons from an Entrepreneur,\u201d Turner\u00a0provided life tips he has utilized in becoming the leader of one of the world\u2019s largest Wendy\u2019s franchise businesses. In addition to serving as the First Sun Management CEO, Turner is co-founder and chairman of the company and has been with the business\u00a0since its inception in 1985. Prior to that, Turner worked in fundraising for Clemson University and was one of the people behind the still popular IPTAY (I Pay Ten a Year) campaign for Clemson alumni and supporters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turner gave Delta State students a number of tips he&#8217;s learned throughout his career, both in fundraising and as an entrepreneur. One of the most important tips, he said, is to learn how to listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Learn to communicate well, and then learn to listen even better,&#8221; Turner said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition, Turner said students must be willing to be aware of themselves, to invest in their communities and to want to help the people around them.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-67260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Tuner 2015 Colloquia-27\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27-338x225.jpg 338w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27-75x50.jpg 75w, https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/09\/Tuner-2015-Colloquia-27-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;If you help enough people get what they want, you will have everything you need,&#8221; he said, cautioning that doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean money, but does mean fulfillment and purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After his lecture, which drew a standing ovation from those in attendance, Turner took questions from a panel of campus leaders and the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Delta State President William N. LaForge established the colloquia program when taking office in 2013 and said he was thrilled so many students were in attendance for Turner&#8217;s address.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Join Delta State Oct. 22 for the next distinguished speaker in the series, United States Poet Laureate and Mississippi Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey.
