{"id":63964,"date":"2015-06-22T15:53:27","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T20:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=63964"},"modified":"2015-06-22T15:54:29","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T20:54:29","slug":"delta-statement-wins-two-top-ap-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2015\/06\/delta-statement-wins-two-top-ap-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Delta Statement wins two top AP awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Delta Statement, the student-run newspaper at Delta State University, won two awards at the 2015 Louisiana\/Mississippi Associated Press Media Editors Contest: College Division.<\/p>\n<p>The LA\/MS APME contest is one of the largest regional contests with over 1,000 entries. This year\u2019s judges were from New York. Winners were announced at the awards ceremony held at the Loews Hotel in New Orleans on June 20.<\/p>\n<p>Elisabetta Zengaro, editor-in-chief, won second place in the college editorials category for her editorials \u201cBradlee: a legacy in journalism,\u201d \u201cThe death of journalism at Delta State,\u201d and \u201cOne small piece of the pie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judges\u2019 comments were, \u201cIt is indeed unfortunate what happened to both the journalism program and student-run newspaper at Delta State. The Statement\u2019s staff did an excellent job in calling attention to the paper\u2019s service to the university, as well as making a strong case for keeping it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tiago Doneux, layout editor, won third place in the category for layout and design. The judges said the front pages Doneux designed were \u201coverall, clean pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the five colleges recognized in the contest, Delta State was the only winning university in Mississippi. The other colleges to place were: Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech, Loyola and Southeastern Louisiana University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very proud of the two awards The Delta Statement won and of the hard work my staff puts in,\u201d said Zengaro. \u201cTo be the only university from Mississippi recognized in this contest is a huge victory not only for the Statement staff, but for Delta State University.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have continued to show through the distinction The Delta Statement has brought via press awards that students don\u2019t have to attend a larger university to get a quality education,\u201d added Zengaro. \u201cHaving led The Delta Statement to many firsts throughout the course of my editorship, I am honored by the recognition we have received and grateful for the opportunities I have had as a result of my studying journalism at DSU.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Delta Statement, the student-run newspaper at Delta State University, won two awards at the 2015 Louisiana\/Mississippi Associated Press Media Editors Contest: College Division.
