{"id":63511,"date":"2015-04-22T14:09:44","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T19:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=63511"},"modified":"2015-04-22T14:14:26","modified_gmt":"2015-04-22T19:14:26","slug":"63511","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2015\/04\/63511\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Development Student Organization helps with cleanup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Delta State\u2019s phrase \u201cGo Green\u201d will have more than one meaning again, as the university is bringing back its Community Development Student Organization in order to help keep campus\u00a0clean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">The group will help cleanup efforts by bridging the gap between students and the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. Hui Liew, a first year social science department professor, felt it was vital to bring back\u00a0an organization like this to Delta State. After she received the rights to start the organization, she sought the help of then community development graduate major Cheryl Beaty.\u00a0Beaty is now the senior secretary for Department of Music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDr. Liew approached me because I was a first-year student in the community development program,\u201d said Beaty, president of the new organization. \u201cThere were other students in the program as well, but with the program being a graduate degree, many of the students were not on campus and were not available to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">While the community development program has stayed active, a branch of the program was cut back in 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWhat we are doing with the organization is now allowing undergraduates and non-majors to join,\u201d said Beaty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">The organization already has 18 members in just over a month since its revival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s great that so many have joined already,\u201d said Beaty. \u201cBut the current goal is to get as many students involved in this organization as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">The first activity the group participated in was the Cleveland Cleanup held downtown\u00a0April 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"color: #000000;\">For more information on the\u00a0Community Development Student Organization\u00a0and how to join, contact Beaty by email at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:cbeaty@deltastate.edu\"><span class=\"s2\">cbeaty@deltastate.edu<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or by phone 662-846-4615.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delta State\u2019s phrase \u201cGo Green\u201d will have more than one meaning again, as the university is bringing back its Community Development Student Organization in order to help keep campus\u00a0clean.
