Angela Miller, a Delta State University senior social work major, is the recent recipient of the Mississippi Chapter National Association for Social Workers\u2019 2015 Claire Nowlin Award.<\/p>\n
The recognition is granted to the individual who best exemplifies professionalism as a student and exhibits the character traits necessary in the practice of social work.<\/p>\n
Miller is the first Delta State recipient in over 12 years, and she said her accomplishment was very unexpected.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had no idea I would get anything,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
With this award under her belt, Miller has no plans to stop pursuing her career. She wants to continue to work on youth development and community development.<\/p>\n
The senior\u2019s love for social work is rooter in her passion for reaching out to others.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted someone to be there for me,\u201d she said. Now, she wants to be there for others.<\/p>\n
Miller added that her instructors are her inspiration.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think [the award] is a wonderful testament to Angela\u2019s character,\u201d said Cora Jackson, director of Field Education and Delta State instructor of social work. \u201cI watched her grow over the last two years. I think she will make an amazing social worker.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Misssippi Chapter of NASW established the Claire Nowlin Award in 2007 in memory of Claire Nowlin, who is remembered as an outstanding member of NASW, past chapter president, and an advocate for children, families and the social work profession.<\/p>\n
