{"id":62475,"date":"2015-01-14T08:50:09","date_gmt":"2015-01-14T14:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=62475"},"modified":"2015-01-14T14:06:45","modified_gmt":"2015-01-14T20:06:45","slug":"iowa-state-professor-to-exhibit-ghanaian-furniture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2015\/01\/iowa-state-professor-to-exhibit-ghanaian-furniture\/","title":{"rendered":"Iowa State professor to exhibit Ghanaian furniture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Join the Delta State University Department of Art in\u00a0welcoming nationally recognized furniture designer Chris Martin with his exhibit &#8220;Asa Sawa, Reflections on Ghana,&#8221; opening at\u00a0the Fielding Wright Art Gallery Jan. 22 from 5-7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s high-end designs were created as a response to his time in Ghana while serving in the Peace Corps.<\/p>\n<p>Martin focuses on traditional furniture of the Ghanaian culture with a uniquely American twist. His work masterfully combines modern materials such as carbon fiber and fiberglass with traditional African beads and fabrics for colorful, thought-provoking works of functional art.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0will also be conducting a\u00a0wood working demonstration for current Delta State furniture design students on Jan. 21 from 5:15-7:30 p.m. in room 150 of the Holcomb-Norwood Annex located next to the Wright Art Building. Additionally, Martin will lecture on\u00a0his\u00a0work and Peace Corps experience on Jan. 23, from 12:15\u20131:15 p.m. in the Wright Gallery. All events are open to the public, and those interested are invited to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Martin is a former colleague and friend of Delta State\u00a0sculpture professor Michael Stanley. Their connection began at\u00a0Iowa State University, where Martin\u00a0is an associate professor of art and visual culture and is head of the furniture design program. He is also a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris is an amazing artist and a great person,&#8221; said Stanley. &#8220;He is innovative and thoughtful with his artistic approach and blurs the line between art and craft. I&#8217;m really excited to have him here on campus and I hope everyone takes advantage of this opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2d2d2d;\">The opening reception is free, and attendance is encouraged by the campus and community. &#8220;Asa Sawa, Reflections on Ghana&#8221; will remain in the gallery through\u00a0Feb. 27. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
