{"id":62435,"date":"2015-01-06T13:26:31","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T19:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=62435"},"modified":"2015-01-06T13:26:31","modified_gmt":"2015-01-06T19:26:31","slug":"expungement-clinic-coming-to-delta-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2015\/01\/expungement-clinic-coming-to-delta-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Expungement clinic coming to Delta State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ) will hold an expungement clinic Jan. 14-15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Center for Community and Economic Development (CCED) in conjunction with Delta State University\u2019s AmeriCorps*VISTA program and Equal Justice Works.<\/p>\n<p>The program aims to help Deltans clear their arrest and conviction records. Specifically, the clinic is designed to remove barriers to employment for people with arrest and conviction histories.<\/p>\n<p>Kyra McDonald, Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow at MCJ, is the attorney hosting the clinic. Also on hand will be Linda Stringfellow, director of the AmeriCorps*VISTA program at Delta State\u2019s CCED.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited about this opportunity,\u201d McDonald said. \u201cSo many Mississippians qualify for expungements but can\u2019t afford the legal representation they need. We are giving our professional legal help for free. We are so happy to offer the service in the Delta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to have the services of AmeriCorps Legal Fellows and the Mississippi Center for Justice in the Delta,\u201d said Stringfellow. \u201cThis clinic is the perfect opportunity for individuals to begin the process of taking the appropriate steps in removing barriers to employment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expungement help is also available through the Jackson office of MCJ. Potential clients can find out if they qualify for an expungement and set up an appointment for the clinic by calling McDonald at 769-230-2829.<\/p>\n<p>The MCJ is a nonprofit, public interest law firm committed to advancing racial and economic justice. Supported and staffed by attorneys, community leaders and volunteers, the center develops and pursues strategies to combat discrimination and poverty statewide.<\/p>\n<p>Created in 1993, the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellowship Program is one of the most productive and highly regarded national service programs in the country.
