{"id":61957,"date":"2014-11-03T09:53:06","date_gmt":"2014-11-03T15:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/?p=61957"},"modified":"2014-11-03T09:53:06","modified_gmt":"2014-11-03T15:53:06","slug":"jazz-ensemble-presents-fall-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2014\/11\/jazz-ensemble-presents-fall-concert\/","title":{"rendered":"Jazz Ensemble presents fall concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Delta State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of assistant professor of music Dr. Bret Pimentel, presents its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday\u00a0in the Delta and Pine Land Theatre of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The DSU Jazz Ensemble is a 17-piece \u201cbig band\u201d made up of music majors and non music majors selected by competitive audition. The band is known in the community for its annual Big Band Bash fundraiser, an evening of dining, dancing and classic swing era music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Big band jazz is characterized by tightly coordinated, high-energy playing from a large horn section made up of trumpets, trombones and saxophones, working in partnership with a powerful, driving rhythm section of keyboards, bass and drums. Individual group members often perform solos that are improvised and composed spontaneously in live performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The DSU Jazz Ensemble\u2019s repertoire includes favorites from the swing era of the 1930s and &#8217;40s,\u00a0as well as more contemporary jazz styles from the &#8217;50s to the present.
