The Delta Center for Culture and Learning recently provided a Delta heritage tour for students from the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing at Delta State University.<\/p>\n
Donna Koestler, a nurse practitioner and instructor in the program,\u00a0arranged the tour. Around 60\u00a0members of the first-year nursing class participated. After a classroom presentation on the Delta’s cultural heritage, students visited and learned about local sites that will better help them understand and appreciate the patients they will be serving in the future.<\/p>\n
The center’s director, Dr. Rolando Herts, also introduced the group to the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area. The center currently acts as the manager of this partnership with the National Park Service.<\/p>\n
The group visited historic Po’ Monkey\u2019s Lounge outside Merigold, widely known as the last rural jook house. Lee Aylward and Henry Outlaw of the Delta Center were guides for the tour.<\/p>\n
