The Delta State University Department of Music will present Dr. Douglas Mark, associate professor of trombone\/low brass, in a faculty recital on Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Mark will be assisted by associate professor of piano Dr. Jung-Won Shin, operatic baritone Thomas Barrett and violinist Anne-Ga\u00eblle Ravetto.<\/p>\n

The recital will include both popular classics of the trombone repertoire, as well as lesser known works. The first selection on the program is \u201cPiece in Eb Minor\u201d written by French composer J-Guy Ropartz.\u00a0 It is considered to be a staple of the trombone library.\u00a0 This will be followed by another classic, Henri Dutilleux\u2019s \u201cChoral, Cadence et Fugato.\u201d\u00a0 Its performance pays homage to Mr. Dutilleux, who passed away in June.<\/p>\n

A highlight of the recital will be the performance of a set of three rarely played arias from the classical period.\u00a0 These unique works, which will feature Barrett,\u00a0 are original compositions that blend the timbre of the trombone with the human voice.\u00a0 The set includes a selection entitled \u201cMenschen sagt Was ist das leben?\u201d from Ernst Eberlin\u2019s oratorio, Der verlorene Sohn<\/i>, Carlo M\u00fcller\u2019s \u201cPlauctus anime Suspirautis ad Deum\u201d and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\u2019s \u201cJener Donnerworte Kraft\u201d from his Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebotes<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The second half of the performance includes works that are significantly more contemporary.\u00a0 Dr. Mark will perform \u201cArrows of Time\u201d by American composer Richard Peaslee and will close the recital with a work by Swiss composer John Glenesk Mortimer, entitled \u201cTrombonissimo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Mark\u00a0provides instruction in applied low brass and directs the Delta State brass ensemble. He has held similar positions at the Hochstein School of Music, Hamilton College, Nazareth College, and Colgate University, all located in western New York.<\/p>\n

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Mark has performed with several orchestras, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Locally, he has performed with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Tupelo Symphony and the Delta Symphony. He has been an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts. An advocate of community music projects, Dr. Mark has participated in the NEA Chamber Music Rural Residency in Liberal, Kan. He has performed internationally in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Taiwan.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mark is an artist\/clinician for Antoine Courtois Paris trombones.<\/p>\n
