{"id":3314,"date":"2012-10-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2012\/10\/26\/delta-state-university-jazz-ensemble-to-perform-november-8\/"},"modified":"2013-09-09T14:05:53","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T14:05:53","slug":"delta-state-university-jazz-ensemble-to-perform-november-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deltastate.edu\/news-and-events\/2012\/10\/delta-state-university-jazz-ensemble-to-perform-november-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Delta State University Jazz Ensemble to perform November 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"301\" src=\"\/Images\/dsu_jazz_ensemble.jpg.jpg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Delta State University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Bret Pimentel, will present its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, in the Delta and Pine Land Theatre of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.<\/p>\n<p>The Delta State Jazz Ensemble is a 15-piece &ldquo;big band&rdquo; made up of music majors and non-music majors selected by competitive audition.<\/p>\n<p>Big band jazz is characterized by tightly coordinated, high-energy playing from a large horn section made up of trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, working in partnership with a powerful, driving rhythm section of keyboards, bass, and drums. Individual group members often perform solos that are &ldquo;improvised&rdquo;&mdash;composed spontaneously in live performance.<\/p>\n<p>The ensemble&rsquo;s repertoire includes favorites from the Swing Era of the 1930&rsquo;s and 1940&rsquo;s as well as more contemporary jazz styles from the 1950&rsquo;s to the present. This year&rsquo;s fall concert lineup includes swing classics from the repertoires of the Count Basie and Glenn Miller bands, fiery Afro-Cuban sounds, lush ballads, and newer jazz sounds influenced by rock and hip-hop.
