Congressman Bennie Thompson will visit Delta State University on Thursday, October 25, from 12:15 – 1:30 p.m. in Jobe Auditorium as a guest lecturer for the DSUVotes program.<\/p>\n

DSUVotes is a program under the guidance of the Madison Center and is wholly organized and supported by the following students:  Michael Fair, Katie Portner and Danielle Stanley.<\/p>\n

Bennie G. Thompson, is the U.S. Representative for Mississippi’s 2nd congressional district, serving since 1993, and the ranking member of the Committee on Homeland Security since 2011.
 
From 1968 to 1972, Thompson served as alderman, and he went on to serve as mayor from 1973 to 1980 in Bolton.  As mayor of Bolton, and founding member and President of the Mississippi Association of Black Mayors, he initiated policies and provided services that benefited the underserved citizens of his hometown.<\/p>\n

From 1980 to 1993, Thompson served as County Supervisor for Hinds County and was the founding member and President of the state’s Association of Black Supervisors.<\/p>\n

Elected the Democratic Congressman for Mississippi’s Second District in 1993 Thompson is serving his ninth term as Congressman and is the longest-serving African-American elected official in the state of Mississippi.
Congressman Thompson is a lifelong member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Bolton.  He has been married to his college sweetheart, London Johnson of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, for 42 years.  The couple has one daughter BendaLonne, one granddaughter, Jeanna and one grandson, Thomas Gordon.<\/p>\n
