The Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University recently hosted the Josie Robertson Day of Service at the Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge. Twenty-five Robertson Scholars participated, along with members of the Friends of Dahomey Refuge, employees of the Audubon Society, and several Delta State faculty and staff. <\/p>\n
Robertson Scholars are the recipients of support from Julian Robertson, and attend either Duke or the University of North Carolina. During the summer of their freshman year, they spend two months in one of four locations: Appalachian Kentucky, New Orleans, Atlanta, or the Mississippi Delta. On one weekend of the summer, they all visit the Delta to remember Julian Robertson’s wife with a Day of Service. <\/p>\n
This year, the group built a “Swift Tower”, which is a habitat for chimney swifts, a threatened bird species that normally nests in hollow trees. The tower is fifteen feet tall, and can be seen at the Dahomey Refuge on Boyle-Skeen Road. Robertson Scholars who participated came to the Delta from across the US, Sweden, the Ivory Coast, New Zealand, and Australia. A second tower will be installed on the Delta State campus as part of the Delta State 9-11 Day of Service.
